Bob Fink Presents UofL Health’s Environmental Monitoring Transformation

During this Lunch & Learn, Bob Fink presents the UofL Health case study and explains how EdgeX helped modernize environmental monitoring across hospitals, pharmacies, physician practices and urgent care centers.

UofL Health needed a dependable, scalable system for monitoring temperature, humidity and pressure within pharmacy cleanrooms, medication storage areas, refrigerators and more than 50 physician clinics and urgent care locations. Its previous Wi-Fi-based solution experienced recurring connectivity problems, adding manual work for pharmacy employees and increasing the risk of missed environmental data.

EdgeX introduced a completely wire-free monitoring system that operates through an independent cellular connection. Because the platform does not rely on hospital Wi-Fi or require additional wiring and electrical outlets, it can be installed quickly and repositioned as refrigerators, equipment and room layouts change.

The EdgeX team supported the implementation from planning through deployment. This included assessing facility requirements, installing sensors at individual clinic locations, educating staff and configuring the monitoring software. EdgeX also integrated data with UofL Health’s Pharmacy Stars Compounding360 workflow to support USP 797 documentation.

As a result, UofL Health has a more automated and reliable monitoring process. Pharmacy technicians no longer need to visit each device individually to record temperature, humidity and pressure readings from cleanrooms and refrigerators.
